Why We Exclusively Use FSP Power Supplies in our Builds and Benchmarks

Top 5 reasons why we use FSP PSU

Contents (maximize to view)

It’s an unwritten rule in the PC building scene and PC enthusiasts’ community never to skimp out or cheap out on your power supply. You risk the chance of killing your whole pc or, in the worst case, burning your house down when you skimp on your power supply. Investing in a good power supply will certainly last you years, and in most cases, reusing your old one when you slowly upgrade your PC parts or building a new PC. PSU brands such as FSP have been the go-to for most enthusiasts for their builds and even reviewers due to their reliable and reputable PSUs.

Since I joined GadgetPilipinas in 2019, we have been using FSP power supplies on our test benches, reviews, and build guides. Except for other sponsored projects, FSP has always been our first choice whenever we need a power supply. Here are our 5 reasons why we use FSP PSUs on our Builds, Benchmarks, and Reviews – and these are also the reasons on why you should use one too

FSP

FSP is a Taiwanese brand that started out in 1993, specializing in OEM and ODM power supply solutions in multiple industries, such as consumer PCs, IPCs, server systems, data centers, workstations, and many more. FSP’s specialty in the PSU front is recognized in the industry as FSP is also the OEM behind other brands’ PSUs.

5 Reasons Why We Use FSP PSUs

Long-Term Testing Reliability

FSP PSU Reliability
FSP PSU Reliability

FSP PSUs are known for their reliability with little-to-no RMAs and burning issues, especially as you go up the PSU wattage capacity. Back during the COVID-19 lockdown period, I was staying in our province, where brownouts and blackouts are frequent due to the overconsumption of our region’s electricity grid. I have lost five Platinum PSUs across different reputable brands. For reference, power fluctuations happen so often that there are scheduled brownouts apart from the frequent power outages, which have even killed appliances like TVs, refrigerators, and air conditioners.

Five power supplies later, FSP reached out for a review of the FSP Hydro PTM Pro 1200W Platinum, and I was astonished by the superb build quality and reliability of the PSU, being able to withstand months’ worth of power outages that my previous PSUs weren’t able to achieve. The FSP Hydro PTM Pro 1200W Platinum has been retired since the introduction of the new ATX 3.0 standard and is currently serving as a backup power supply.

Easy Naming Scheme

Back in Computex 2024, FSP rebranded its power supply line to be more recognizable and noob-friendly – a move that’s common in the industry but often led to worse naming conventions(*cough* Intel and AMD). FSP simplified its product line into three tiers: VITA, MEGA, and ADVAN series, to cater to different budget and use-case.

VITA

Vita is now FSP’s entry-level lineup, featuring Bronze and Gold certifications with capacities up to 1000W. To simplify the naming scheme, the first letter after the Vita indicates the certification, while the second indicates the “modularity.” For Example, the Vita GM 1000W is a Gold PSU with Modular PSU cables, hence the GM model name.

ADVAN

Advan series includes up to Platinum certification and supports the latest ATX 3.1 standard, meaning it has support for Nvidia’s 12V-2×6 power connector. The one showcased on their booth is the Advan PM 1000W, P stands for Platinum and M for Modular.

MEGA

The new Mega series PSUs are designed for power-hungry components with capacities ranging from 1000W to a whopping 1650W of power. What makes the Mega series a level above Advan is its certification up to the Titanium tier certification, denoting top-tier stability, durability, and power efficiency.

Ahead of the Curve – Meeting Industry Standards

CPUs and GPUs have been more power-hungry than ever, resulting in ridiculous power requirements and higher power spikes due to the short boosts to achieve high clock speeds. These have caused even reputable PSUs to show issues or fail. Even before the trend, a lot of tech reviewers were already calling for a more updated and stringent certification for PSus as the 80+ certification was already getting outdated and is no longer a clear indicator of a reliable and capable power supply.

FSP PSU Cybenetics

Enter Cybenetics PSU certification, which launched in 2017. Cybenetic’s PSU ETA and LAMBDA certification has more tests and cover a wider range of a power supply’s efficiency, especially in more various workloads. FSP is one of the first few power supply brands to implement Cybenetics certification in its power supply lineup. While there’s a consensus from reviewers about the value of the 80+ ratings, FSP uses both certifications on its latest VITA, ADVAN, and MEGA PSUs.

As of writing, FSP has 18 ETA and LAMBDA certified power supplies with majority of the PSUs rated at either GOLD or PLATINUM efficiency and an average of A for the noise rating. With PSUs dating as far as 2018 and as recent as September 2024, FSP has shown its dedication in providing quality products and showcasing transparency to its customers. Do note that this is based on Cybenetic’s published database – there could be more PSUs undergoing certification, especially upcoming models.

Competitive Pricing

FSP initially caught my radar with its very competitive pricing. FSP PSUs are one the cheaper end of the spectrum when you compare other PSUs similar specs. But cheap doesn’t mean lower quality. A quick 850W GOLD rated PSU search on PCHub shows FSP VITA series GPUs being cheaper than their counterparts. These VITA PSUs are also the latest models as indicated by the ATX 3.1 and PCIE 5.1 specification – ideal for the new Nvidia RTX 50 series GPUs. The rest of the listings show higher priced yet are older models

FSP White Power Supply

FSP also doesn’t have a white model tax on their PSUs as the black and white models have the same price. FSP’s SFX power supplies don’t have that much of a high premium compared to ATX counterparts not to mention there’s no white model premium even on SFX models.

In the recent LTT video discussion about buying dangerous power supplies, LTT Labs found out that the Vita GM 850W & 1000W 80+ Gold and Cybenetics GOLD PSUs passes the Platinum rating and certification. So, you’re getting a more premium Platinum PSU with the VITA GM 850 & 1000W at a price of your typical GOLD PSU.

User-Friendly Warranty Policy

You can measure a brand’s confidence in its products with its warranty terms and duration. Most FSP PSUs have a 10-year outright replacement warranty. Most PSU brands have a PSU warranty duration of only 5 years while the PSU-centric brands have 8 years, and the 10 year warranty is reserved on Platinum and Titanium rated power supplies.

Claiming an RMA is easy with FSP. Users have two options depending on the warranty status of your power supply.

  1. Visit the Store of Purchase

If their FSP power supply is still under standard one-year store warranty, customers can visit the store where they originally purchased the product to receive warranty service.

If store warranty has lapsed, simply send a message to their Facebook page or email them at [email protected] to have your unit serviced.

What you’ll need to provide:

  • Receipt  / Proof of Original Purchase
  • Product Serial Number

Warranty coverage depends on the product, specified on its product packaging. For example, the Hydro Ti PRO line has a 10-year warranty, which includes product replacement within the warranty period. This warranty replacement service is currently exclusive for Philippine customers.

Do note that warranty claims are subject to assessment of product condition with the replacement subject to FSP’s technical team’s evaluation.  Do note that FSP has the right to reject warranty claims if the customer provide insufficient information, or if the product has evidence of intentional damage.

Simply contact them either via Facebook Page, Email, or through your PC store or local distributor to process your warranty. If its within the standard one-year shop warranty, then you can first channel your RMA through the store of purchase for the hassle-free route.

FSP Power Supplies That We Used

FSP HYDRO PTM PRO 1200W 80+ Platinum – TestBench PSU

As mentioned earlier, the FSP Hydro PTM Pro 12000W 80+ Platinum served as our test bench PSU since the covid pandemic. The FSP Hydro PTM PRO was one of the best PSUs you could buy during its time, especially if you’re housing a Core i9 or Ryzen 9 CPU paired with the RTX 3090. A quick “FSP”test search on our website shows numerous reviews where we used the FSP Hydro PTM PRO.

FSP Hydro GD 650W 80+ GOLD – Php 50k Gaming PC Build 2021

A Php 50k Gaming PC back in 2021 was already considered highend due to the rising prices of components because of COVID. Such a large investment, especially for first time PC builders require a reliable PSU so we went with the value FSP Hydro GD 850W 80+ GOLD PSU. I had friends and readers who built the similar configurations but with the same PSU and I haven’t gotten any complaints or troubleshooting queries from them.

FSP DAGGER PRO 650W 80+ GOLD SFX – Php 60k ITX Gaming PC Build 2021

Months after our Php 50k Gaming PC Build Guide, we built an ITX version for a Php 10,000 premium. Most of the premium went to the SFX specific components and we got the FSP Dagger Pro 650W 80+ GOLD SFX PSU for only Php 5,350 which was only about a Php 1,000 premium over ATX 650W GOLD PSUs at the time. The parts used from the Php 60k ITX Gaming PC Build was built for a friend which had its GPU upgraded to an RTX 3070 last year and it still runs fine.

FSP HYDRO GD 650W 80+ GOLD PSU – Php 50k Gaming PC Build 2023

Php 50,000 budget remains to be the most common price budget for PC builds up to this day, especially for first time PC builders. RTX 40 series GPUs just launched at the time and cryptocurrency mining just came to a halt so PC component pices were on the verge of recovery. For the Php 50k PC budget, we used an FSP Hydro GD 650W 80+ GOLD PSU for under Php 4,000 as most PSUs were priced at around Php 5,000 at the time.

Php 60k Gaming PC Build 2024 FSP Hydro G Pro 650W

From the Php 50k budget for an i5 CPU + RTX x60 series GPU in 2021 to a Php 60k Gaming Build for the latest generation counterparts in 2024. You have the same component tiers yet the PSU on the build is also a latest gen component with the FSP Hydro G PRO 650W 80+ GOLD is an ATX 3.0 PSU. The Php 10,000 price premium over last year’s build went to the new CPU, motherboard, DDR5 memory, and Gen4 SSD. We managed to maintain, if not, surpass our PSU model compared to last year thanks to FSP’s competitive pricing – side note to also being a testament to our philosphy of never skimping out on your power supply.

The saying “OLD but GOLD” is very much applicable to the FSP Dagger Pro 650W 80+ GOLD SFX PSU. When you factor out inflation and the high forex rate in the Philippines, the FSP Dagger Pro 650 SFX PSU maintained its pricing coming from 2021. If you want to factor in either inflation or forex, then it only had a Php 150 price increase making it still our go to ITX Build PSU. Point is, FSP’s older model PSU is still more than enough for the latest components.

Powering the power hungry PC is the FSP VITA GM 850W 80+ GOLD ATX 3.1 PSU. FSP VITA GM 1000W ATX 3.1 – RTX 50 and RX 9070 series Reviews

We went with an FSP VITA GM 850W on very first build guide of 2025 as we have been using the 1000W variant since we started benchmarking for the upcoming RTX 50 series GPUs at the time. Note that 1000W is the minium recommended PSU for the RTX 5090 yet we didn’t experience any problem since. I am marked safe from the 12VHPWR melting connector issue.
