Google has announced that it will officially make Gemini the primary AI assistant and phase out Google Assistant on Android mobile devices starting September 4.

The rollout is expected to take several weeks to reach all users and devices globally. Here are some changes that will take place when it’s fully implemented:
- No longer able to access or switch back to Google Assistant on their mobile devices
- Activation methods like “Hey Google” or long-pressing the power button will automatically launch Gemini instead of Google Assistant
- The new AI assistant will serve as the default assistant for devices that meet minimum hardware requirements in supported regions
These will also impact various devices such as Wear OS Smartwatches, Headphones, Earbuds, Android Auto, and cars with Google Built-in.
It was specifically mentioned that the update targets mobile devices, smartphones, tablets, and mobile-connected accessories. Devices like Google TV devices, Google Home smart speakers, and smart displays are not immediately affected.
However, migration plans to bring the new AI assistant to the latter-mentioned devices remain in development.
The shift is part of Google’s strategy to consolidate AI capabilities under the Gemini framework, delivering a more integrated and conversational assistant across it ecosystem.
