OpenAI is reportedly accelerating its hardware development, with mass production of its first dedicated “AI agent” smartphone now targeted for the first half of 2027. This updated timeline, revealed by renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, suggests the company is moving significantly faster than previous estimates, which pointed to a 2028 release.

The device will be powered by a custom-designed chipset manufactured on TSMC’s cutting-edge N2P node. While Qualcomm was previously considered, MediaTek has emerged as the frontrunner to supply a modified version of its upcoming Dimensity 9600. The hardware is being engineered to prioritize “AI-first” functionality, featuring a dual-NPU (Neural Processing Unit) architecture and next-generation LPDDR6 RAM to eliminate bottlenecks in real-time processing.

Moreover, OpenAI’s vision centers on an autonomous AI agent. This system is designed to understand user intent and context and perform tasks directly through the operating system.
OpenAI aims to bypass the restrictions of existing ecosystems like iOS and Android. Final specifications for the device are expected to surface by late 2026.
