AMD has begun mimicking Intel’s previous ways with processor refreshes that offer only as little an upgrade as a speed boost in clock speeds. The AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D, announced last CES 2026, joins AMD’s 9000 series CPU lineup with a higher 400 MHz boost clock over the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Does this 400MHz speed bump translate to an upgrade-worthy purchase?

The AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D joins AMD’s Ryzen 9000 X3D lineup, namely the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, Ryzen 9 9900X3D, and Ryzen 7 9800X3D, built on the AMD Zen 5 architecture. These X3D CPUs, Ryzen 7 9850X3D included, sport AMD’s 2nd-Gen 3D V-Cache Technology. Unlike previous generation 3D V-Cache CPUs, the 3D V-Cache is now placed at the bottom stack for direct cooler access to the processor cores.

AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D Temps and Power Draw

Despite the higher 400MHz boost clocks, the AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D shares the same 120W TDP as the 9800X3D. That said, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D in our testing capped at around 95.6°C compared to the 96.2°C on the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. This is due to the higher peak powerdraw of the 9800X3D at 154.427W compared to the newer 9850X3D’s 146.806W.

You’re able to utilize the CPU’s 5.6GHz Max Boost Clock if you have a cooler that can handle the 120W TDP.

Conclusion

AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D Review
AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D Review

The AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D is a love-hate relationship. For those long enough in the enthusiast space, it’s a major telltale sign that AMD is starting to mimic Intel’s previous ways that led to their downfall. That said, the love aspect of it is the 400MHz boost, especially in applications that prioritize speed, which certainly translates to a performance improvement. AMD isn’t greedy enough to require new motherboards or other components that would’ve bumped up the overall price.

The AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D is a product of a manufacturing process efficiency in which AMD has hinted at support of the AM5 platform for an additional year. With its Php 2,000 or $20 premium over the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D’s launch price, the AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D isn’t targeting those who already have an X3D chip from AMD, given the marginal improvements over its 9800X3D brother. It’s for those who still haven’t joined Team Red or those looking for a slightly more powerful processor under the Php 30,000 mark. It’s basically a factory overclocked version of the 9800X3D that you’re paying for out of the box.

So, the AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D brings in the nail to the coffin for those who aren’t yet convinced of getting an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, or for those who need slightly more compute without dealing with the extra premium or hassle for the Ryzen 9 X3D chips. Overall, it’s a no-brainer CPU purchase for those looking to build a high-end gaming pc or to those looking to breathe new life into their nearly retiring AM5 platform without much damage to their wallets, especially with the current RAM and SSD AI shortage.
