Apple has introduced a new Mac Studio powered by the M5 Max and the all-new M5 Ultra chips. This compact desktop is its most powerful Mac for on-device artificial intelligence and demanding professional workloads.
The new Mac Studio delivers up to 1.3 times faster CPU performance, up to 1.8 times faster graphics, up to twice as fast storage, and up to 4.3 times faster AI performance. It is aimed at creatives, developers, AI researchers, data scientists, and other professionals who need substantial performance in a desktop that occupies minimal space.
M5 Max Brings Serious Pro Performance
Mac Studio with M5 Max features an 18-core CPU with six super cores and 12 performance cores. Its GPU includes up to 40 cores, with Neural Accelerators built into every core, and supports up to 128GB of unified memory.
The M5 Max model provides up to 614GB/s of unified memory bandwidth and is designed for demanding tasks such as code compilation, game development, real-time 3D work, motion graphics, photography, and music production. The GPU is up to 50 percent faster than the previous generation, which helps deliver higher frame rates and more complex scene geometry.
It boasts third-generation hardware-accelerated ray tracing for more realistic lighting, reflections, and shadows. Enhanced shader cores support smoother viewport navigation and faster offline rendering, while the Media Engine supports hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and AV1 decoding.
The M5 Max can deliver up to 10.7 times faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio than Mac Studio with M1 Max, up to 7.4 times faster text-to-image performance, and up to 5.3 times faster Magic Mask performance in DaVinci Resolve Studio compared to Mac Studio with M1 Max, and up to 3 times faster versus M4 Max.
M5 Ultra Targets Extreme Workloads
For professionals handling the most intensive projects, Mac Studio with M5 Ultra scales to a 36-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, and up to 512GB of unified memory. The CPU has 12 super cores and 24 performance cores, delivering up to 1.3 times higher multithreaded performance than M3 Ultra.
The M5 Ultra is the first Ultra chip to bring Neural Accelerators to every GPU core, with up to 4.3 times the peak AI compute performance of M3 Ultra and up to 1.8 times faster graphics than the previous generation.
With up to 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth, the M5 Ultra is built for local AI models, large datasets, complex simulations, and professional video production. Its Media Engine has twice the video encode and decode blocks of M5 Max and can play up to 33 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video at 30 frames per second.
Local AI and System Clustering
The new Mac Studio can run massive language models entirely on the device, combining high memory capacity with faster AI processing. This approach allows users to work privately without counting tokens or worrying about rising cloud costs.
Multiple Mac Studio systems can also be clustered using Thunderbolt 5 and remote direct memory access. The configuration creates a shared memory pool across systems, allowing teams to load large open-weight models. A cluster of four systems can deliver up to three times faster AI inference than a single Mac Studio.
It supports Core AI, Apple’s framework for building, running, and deploying AI models on Apple silicon. Developers can also use MLX, Apple’s open-source machine-learning framework, alongside Xcode and other tools for experimentation, training, fine-tuning, and deployment.

The new Mac Studio features Thunderbolt 5 with up to 120Gb/s of bandwidth, enabling high-performance external storage, displays, PCIe expansion chassis, and hubs. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 arrive on Mac Studio for the first time through Apple’s N1 chip.
The device supports genlock over USB-C for precise synchronization between displays and professional camera capture. It can drive up to eight displays, including as many as four Studio Display XDR units at full 5K resolution and 120Hz.
