StarCraft open-world shooter announcement BlizzCon 2026

After over a decade of waiting, Blizzard Entertainment has finally brought StarCraft back but not as a traditional real-time strategy game. At today’s BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony, the company revealed a new open-world shooter simply titled StarCraft, targeting a spring 2030 release.

StarCraft Returns as an Open-World Shooter

Led by Dan Hay, the former lead producer on the Far Cry series who joined Blizzard in recent years, the new StarCraft aims to re-ignite the sci-fi universe for a new audience. The game is described as a story-driven open-world shooter set in the grim Dominion military.

The announcement debuted with a cinematic trailer showing a Marine named Holt going through Dominion training, only to face a Zergling rush on his first deployment. The trailer carries the tone of a war that grinds soldiers down — damaged suits being repaired, blood-stained badges pulled off for the next wave of recruits. The voice of Arcturus Mengsk echoes over the loudspeakers.

Dan Hay at the Helm

Dan Hay brings extensive open-world pedigree to the project, having spent years as the creative lead on Ubisoft’s Far Cry franchise, known for its emergent gameplay, vast open environments, and narrative-driven sandboxes. His vision for StarCraft marks a significant departure from the franchise’s real-time strategy roots that defined competitive esports for decades.

Blizzard has not announced whether a traditional StarCraft III RTS is also in development, though the company has confirmed that the shooter is its primary focus for the franchise at this time. The game is still in early development, with the 2030 target giving the team several years to build out its open-world vision.

The Long Road to 2030

The early announcement — four years ahead of its target window — appears designed to help Blizzard ramp up hiring for the project and signal to fans that StarCraft is not forgotten. The franchise has been on ice since StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void shipped its final content years ago, with only the 2017 StarCraft: Remastered release keeping the community active.

This marks the franchise’s second attempt at a shooter after the famously canceled StarCraft: Ghost. With Warhammer 40K finding mainstream success in recent years, Blizzard will need to differentiate its take on sci-fi warfare for a modern audience.
