HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max is the top-specced version of the King of Imaging, the HUAWEI Pura 90s series. A fresh summery gradient and a large telephoto lens are just among the highlights that Huawei introduced to the Pura 90s Pro Max, but here’s what my initial impression of the device is like.

Build and Design
I’m a huge fan of the gradient design, which is a callback to its origins, the Huawei P-series. At the Flagship Product Launch Event, I got to see all four colors, but I was most impressed with how unique the Orange Ocean and Blaze Purple were.
We were given the Blaze Purple, and I just enjoy looking at how the deep purple turns into orange from top to bottom. This colorway doesn’t have the dual-tone gradient mid-frame on the Orange Ocean, but I think the Blaze Purple option brings the freshness of the Orange Ocean, while still having a more classic mid-frame with silver side.
If you’re quite familiar with the HUAWEI Pura series, it continues to feature the iconic Flash Forward rear camera design. However, it also continues to have a camera bump that props up one side of the device when kept face up, which I’m not the biggest fan of. But I think that’s something that will take getting used to (maybe I’ll get back to it when I finish up my full review).
Despite this, though, it is still quite durable, being equipped with Huawei’s own Kunlun Glass, which also protects its 6.9-inch 1.5K 120Hz LTPO OLED display. Speaking of which, this can be quite a handful if you’re not used to similar-sized devices.
Hardware and Battery
Under the hood, the HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max features a Kirin 9030S, and the version lent to us had 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage onboard. I haven’t quite done our full benchmark tests as of writing this, but so far, it’s been very smooth, and I think 512GB has been ample storage for me.
This is coupled with a massive 6000mAh battery, the largest on a Pura device to date. Moreover, it supports 100W HUAWEI SuperCharge and 80W wireless HUAWEI SuperCharge.
Based on my early testing, the battery can give you a full day’s work, and then some, even with 5G mobile data running throughout said day. And yes, you read that right, the HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max (and the Pura 90s Pro) are 5G capable phones.
Software and Other Features
The HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max runs on EMUI 16, which comes with a whole slew of AI features like upgraded Celia and camera ones like AI De-Glare, AI Move, AI Best Expression, and AI Remove.
Additionally, for those who want to simply point and shoot to capture photos, but still want well-framed shots, there’s AI Composition 3.0. It helps guide you to position your camera and automatically set zoom as it sees best.
I’ll definitely look into these features as I use the phone more in my full review.
Camera
Lastly, but most importantly, is the camera. I think at this point, if you know the Pura series, you’ll know it for its impressive camera capabilities. And the HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max definitely continues this legacy.
It is equipped with a 50MP 1/1.26-inch main snapper with f/1.4-f/4.0 adjustable physical aperture, a 40MP ultrawide lens, and the 200MP 1/1.26-inch large RYYB sensor with 4x optical zoom.
These are coupled with the company’s second-generation True-to-Colour Camera. Here are early sample photos I’ve taken so far:
Initial Verdict
The HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max is a promising device. The mix of a stunning design, even with the non-gradient sides on the Blaze Purple color option, a solid camera system, and 5G capabilities already captures my attention.
I have yet to fully push the HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max to its limits. Additionally, I’m checking the device without local pricing knowledge, which, in this RAM and chip storage reality, plays a big role in whether a device is worth it.
It may be a bit early, but I’m honestly loving using this device so far and looking to capture many more memories and put the HUAWEI Pura 90 Pro Max through the wringer as best as I can.
