Overwhelming Nintendo Switch 2 Sales
Nintendo has announced a monumental launch for its new console, the Nintendo Switch 2, which sold over 3.5 million units worldwide in the first four days following its release on June 5, 2025. The initial sales figures establish the console as the fastest-selling piece of hardware in Nintendo’s history. The company confirmed the achievement, stating it represents the “highest global sales level for any Nintendo hardware within the first four days”.
The launch was met with significant fan enthusiasm, leading to sold-out pre-orders and midnight store openings across the globe. Doug Bowser, President of Nintendo of America, noted the positive global response, stating, “Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go”.
A New Sales Benchmark
The Switch 2’s initial performance starkly contrasts with its predecessor. The original Nintendo Switch, launched in March 2017, sold 2.7 million units over a period of three weeks. The new console surpassed that figure in just four days, although it’s worth noting the original Switch faced significant supply constraints at launch.

Upgraded Hardware and New Features
The Nintendo Switch 2 is a significant successor to the original, featuring more powerful processing and graphics performance. Key upgrades include a larger, vivid screen capable of a full 1080p high-definition display when portable and 4K resolution when connected to a compatible television or monitor. The console also introduces redesigned magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers that feature mouse-like functionality. A new “GameChat” feature allows players to voice or video chat and share their game screens with friends online by pressing a new dedicated button on the controller.

The console launched alongside Mario Kart World, an exclusive title that has been bundled with the system to drive sales. The game introduces an interconnected open world, dynamic weather conditions, and online races with up to 24 drivers.
Future Outlook and Challenges
While the launch has been a resounding success, Nintendo faces challenges in maintaining this momentum. The Switch 2 is priced at PhP31,990 in the Philippines, which is PhP4,000 pricier than US price of PhP499. According to India Times, in a financial results briefing last month, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa acknowledged that the higher price means it “will not be easy” to sustain the initial sales pace.

Despite the price, Nintendo forecasts it will sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles within the current financial year, a target similar to what the original console achieved in its first year. The success of the Switch 2 is critical for the company, as its console business accounts for approximately 90% of its total revenue. The original Switch has sold 152 million units since 2017, making it the third best-selling console of all time and setting a high bar for its successor to meet.
