DJI RS 4 Mini Review
As a first-time user of a camera gimbal, I was excited to get into professional camera stabilization with the DJI RS 4 Mini. This compact and lightweight gimbal is designed specifically for content creators and solo videographers, offering a significant leap in performance and usability compared to its predecessor, the RS 3 Mini.

In this review, I’ll share my hands-on experience with the RS 4 Mini – as a first time user at that – highlighting its features, performance, and how it stacks up against other options in the market.
DJI RS 4 Mini Specifications
Before we get into the details, here are some key specifications of the DJI RS 4 Mini:
- Weight: Approximately 890 grams.
- Payload Capacity: Up to 2 kg.
- Axis Locks: 2nd-generation automated axis locks.
- Stabilization Algorithm: DJI RS 4th-gen stabilization algorithm.
- Vertical Shooting: 3rd-gen native vertical shooting.
- Battery Life: Up to 13 hours.
- Quick Charging: 1 hour and 50 minutes for a full charge.
DJI RS 4 Mini vs DJI RS 3 Mini
Compared to the DJI RS 3 Mini, the DJI RS 4 Mini addresses several key issues from its predecessor. The most notable improvements include the introduction of automated axis locks, enhanced balancing with Teflon-coated axis arms, and a more efficient vertical shooting switch.

These upgrades make the RS 4 Mini significantly easier to use, especially for novice users who struggled with manual balancing and vertical mode switching on the RS 3 Mini.
What’s in the Box?
The RS 4 Mini comes with the gimbal itself and a quick-release plate. However, if you plan to use it with a smartphone, you’ll need to purchase the DJI RS 4 Mini Phone Holder separately, which is not included in the standard package.
Build and Payload
The RS 4 Mini is surprisingly light and compact, making it easier to carry around compared to larger gimbals. For instance, it weighs less than the Hohem MT2, which is another popular option in the market. The RS 4 Mini’s payload capacity of 2 kg is suitable for most mirrorless cameras and lenses, but it might be a challenge for larger cameras or heavier lens setups.

Compatibility to Cameras
I tested the RS 4 Mini with the Sony FX30, which it handled beautifully. The gimbal’s ability to balance and stabilize the camera was impressive, even with the Sony 35mm f/1.8 lens attached. However, I encountered some compatibility issues with the Fujifilm X-M5, which highlights that not all cameras are fully supported.

Compatibility to Smartphones
Using the RS 4 Mini with a smartphone requires the separate purchase of the DJI RS 4 Mini Phone Holder. While this setup offers superior stabilization and payload capacity compared to dedicated smartphone gimbals, it does require rebalancing the gimbal’s axes.

For those who frequently switch between professional cameras and smartphones, this could be a versatile option.
Gimbal Performance
The RS 4 Mini is a gimbal that provides excellent stabilization thanks to its three-axis design. It has multiple modes, including PTF, PF, and FPV, that can be easily switched between using simple controls.
Additionally, it can be paired with the DJI Ronin app, allowing you to use your phone’s accelerometer to control the gimbal. These features make it a great tool for both beginner and experienced videographers.
DJI RS Intelligent Tracking Module
The inclusion of the DJI RS Intelligent Tracking Module is a significant upgrade, providing AI-powered intelligent tracking and composition assistance.

This feature is invaluable for prosumer and professional videographers, as it helps in composing shots and tracking subjects smoothly without compromising movement quality.
Quick Vertical Setup
The RS 4 Mini features a 3rd-gen native vertical shooting switch, which is far more efficient than its predecessor. Switching between horizontal and vertical modes is as simple as pulling the quick-release camera mount, rotating it, and reattaching it. This streamlined process saves time and effort, making it ideal for content creators who frequently switch between formats.

Automatic Axis Lock Feature
One of the standout features of the RS 4 Mini is its automatic axis lock. By pressing the on/off button, the gimbal instantly locks into place, and holding it down shifts all axes into a portable state while turning it off. This feature, borrowed from DJI’s more expensive flagship models, offers unparalleled convenience and ease of use.

Battery Life
In my experience, the RS 4 Mini’s battery life was impressive. Even with a Sony FX30 and a 35mm lens, I managed to use it for about four hours with the battery still at around 70%. DJI claims up to 13 hours of use, though this may vary depending on the payload.
While I wished for longer battery life, the quick charging capability helps mitigate this concern, providing about five hours of use after just 30 minutes of charging.
Verdict
The DJI RS 4 Mini is a significant leap forward in compact gimbal technology, offering ease of use, advanced features, and excellent performance. It’s an ideal choice for those transitioning from smartphone gimbals to more professional setups, thanks to its robust payload capacity and versatile compatibility.

While it has some limitations, such as camera compatibility issues and a relatively shorter battery life compared to larger models, its overall value and convenience make it a compelling option for content creators.
Pricing and Availability
The DJI RS 4 Mini is priced at PHP 16,590 for the standard version, with a combo package available for PHP 20,690. While the separate phone holder’s price has not been disclosed, it adds another layer of versatility for users who want to use their smartphones with this gimbal.
So, should you buy it? The DJI RS 4 Mini is a powerful tool for videographers looking to upgrade their stabilization game without sacrificing portability. Its innovative features and user-friendly design make it an excellent choice for both beginners and professionals alike.
