Canva Craft is now live for every Canva user inside Dream Lab, and for developers through Canva’s public API. Canva unveiled the model on October 22, 2026, calling it the first image generator built and trained from scratch by Canva Research, the company’s in-house lab. It debuted fourth on DesignArena, the crowdsourced design benchmark Canva cites for its rankings, behind three OpenAI models.
Canva says the same scoreboard makes its lab the second most advanced in image generation, ahead of Microsoft, Google, xAI and ByteDance. Those figures come from DesignArena’s public votes, so read them as an opening scoreboard rather than a settled verdict on quality.

Craft plans the layout before it draws
Craft splits generation into two stages. One model reads the prompt and writes a composition plan: which elements appear, where they sit, their relative scale, the visual hierarchy and any text that has to show up. A second model renders that plan into an image at up to 2K resolution across more than 30 aspect ratios.
Canva’s pitch is design rather than photography. Training leaned on millions of human-made templates from the Canva library, so the model learns how layout, hierarchy and type fit together, not just what a finished photo looks like. Prompts can be written in any language, and text inside the rendered image can come out in 55 languages. A JSON boundary-boxing layer also feeds Canva’s Magic Layers, so a generated image opens as editable elements instead of one flat picture.
What it costs to try Canva Craft in the Philippines
Craft lives in Dream Lab, which Canva lists under More on the homepage, and at canva.com/dream-lab. Access is not the same as unlimited use. Canva’s help centre says free accounts get 20 lifetime Dream Lab uses, while Pro, Teams, Nonprofits and Education accounts get up to 500. Craft draws from that same allowance, so a free account spends those 20 generations across all Dream Lab models, not only the new one.

Developers can call Craft through the public API, which Canva pitches as the quickest route to testing it against other models on your own prompts. A Canva MCP server that lets AI assistants and automated workflows generate images is listed as coming soon.
Why Canva built its own model
Canva serves more than a quarter of a billion people who create over 400 designs every second, and running that volume through other companies’ image models is expensive. Canva says model distillation cut the inference steps Craft needs to a fraction of its first version, and a custom inference engine for the planning stage made it an order of magnitude faster. Two cheaper variants, Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast, are in development, and Canva says finer detail such as small print and technical drawings is the next target.

“Craft delivers exceptional results for jobs where the layouts and texts need to be perfect, and renders people and landscapes with stunning quality,” said JJ Fiasson, Canva’s Head of Generative AI. Like Canva’s other AI products, Craft sits behind Canva Shield, the company’s moderation, privacy and reporting layer for generated content.
The launch continues Canva’s 2026 push to own more of its AI stack, following the 100+ Visual Suite upgrades it shipped in September.
