A successor to the affordable Game Console R36 Max is on the way, bringing key physical improvements to the popular budget retro handheld line. Leaked images and specifications for the “R36 Max 2” suggest that while the device maintains its entry-level roots, it addresses several criticisms of the original model.

The most notable change is the display. The Game Console R36 Max 2 moves away from its predecessor’s unusual 1:1 square screen in favor of a larger 4.5-inch IPS panel. This new screen adopts a 4:3 aspect ratio with a 1,024 x 768 resolution, making it a much better fit for the classic 8-bit and 16-bit titles the console is designed to emulate.

As for the ergonomics, the D-pad and left analog stick have swapped positions, and the device reportedly features an upgraded arcade-style joystick.

Under the hood, the console remains modest. It continues to use the Rockchip RK3326 chipset, a quad-core ARM Cortex-A35 processor paired with a Mali-G31 GPU. This choice ensures the device remains affordable, focusing on stable performance for retro systems rather than raw power.
