Smart Infinity, the premium postpaid brand of Smart Communications, has launched Smart Infinity PureVoice, a call service that uses artificial intelligence to strip background noise out of a conversation. The service filters traffic, crowds and music, and the company says conversations stay clear even in the busiest places.

The detail that makes it unusual is who it works for. PureVoice filters noise even on phones that have no built-in noise cancellation, so the capability comes from the network rather than from the handset.

How to turn PureVoice on

There is no app to install and no setup step. During a call, a subscriber presses 8# to enable or disable the feature, which means it can be switched per call rather than committed to for every conversation.

Smart says it will roll out PureVoice to more subscribers soon, but the launch window gives Smart Infinity members first access. Members can call *800 for details.

What Smart says about it

“Voice remains the quintessential service of any telecommunications company,” said Lloyd R. Manaloto, First Vice President and officer-in-charge of Smart. “While the way people communicate continues to evolve, the need for reliable, clear, and seamless conversations remains fundamental. Through PureVoice, we are modernizing voice communications and bringing it into the 5G era.”

“By introducing PureVoice to Smart Infinity members first, we are giving them early access to a new level of call clarity,” said Tina D. Montinola, VP and Head of Smart Infinity, who framed the launch as an Infinity privilege rather than a general network upgrade.

Debbie M. Hu, FVP and Wireless Network Business Partner of Smart, tied the feature to the infrastructure behind it: advances in the network and in AI capabilities, she said, laid the foundation for a more intelligent calling experience.

The groundwork behind Smart Infinity PureVoice

The feature builds on a voice stack Smart has been assembling for years. In 2020 the company completed its Voice over LTE rollout, which enabled higher-quality calls while letting users keep mobile data running during a conversation. It also switched on Video over LTE, which lets subscribers make video calls straight from the phone dialer without a third-party app.

Smart also points to call quality as measured by the National Telecommunications Commission. In the regulator’s latest quality-of-service tests in Metro Manila, the company recorded zero dropped calls, inside the prescribed threshold and ahead of other providers.

Why noise cancellation belongs in the network

Handset-level noise cancellation has always been a premium feature, which is why it tends to arrive on flagship phones and nowhere else. Moving the work to the network changes that equation, because the improvement reaches whatever device the subscriber happens to be holding.

It also quietly raises the floor on what a call is expected to sound like. If a midrange phone on a busy street can produce a clean conversation, the gap between that and a premium handset narrows in the one place people still use a phone as a phone.

Smart has not published technical detail on how the cancellation works, which model runs it, or what latency it adds. For now the practical summary is short: press 8#, and the street gets quieter. Try it out if you own a supported device while being subscribed to Smart Infinity.
