Introduction

The HONOR 400 Pro 5G has a mission: to deliver a flagship-level experience without the astronomical price tag that typically accompanies such devices. At PHP 32,999, HONOR positions this device as an all-around performer that doesn’t compromise on the essentials while remaining accessible to a broader audience. But does it truly deliver on this promise, or are there compromises that potential buyers should be aware of?

How’s the Design and Build Quality

HONOR 400 Pro 5G Review Unit (82)

The HONOR 400 Pro 5G boasts a premium build quality and thoughtful design choices. It’s got an IP68 and IP69 rating for complete dust protection and the ability to withstand high-pressure, high-temperature water jets from any angle. A very welcome feature especially when you’re spending quite some money for this.

At 205 grams, it’s only slightly heavier than its predecessor, the HONOR 200 Pro 5G. The weight difference is negligible in daily use. However, this Pro model is noticeably taller than the HONOR 400 5G, which may be a consideration for users who prefer more compact devices.

The device departs from the flat design of its non-Pro counterpart. While this curved design enhances grip and provides a premium feel, it does present challenges for one-handed operation, particularly for users with smaller hands.

The dual speaker setup, with one speaker at the bottom and the earpiece serving as the second channel, delivers but not quite (we’ll talk about this later), and as expected, no headphone jack.

Can the HONOR 400 Pro 5G Perform Well?

HONOR 400 Pro 5G Review Unit (129)

The HONOR 400 Pro 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and there are some interesting nuances worth noting.

While this is a last-generation flagship chip, some apps suggest that it could be using a downclocked version when compared to other devices using the same processor, such as the HONOR Magic6 Pro. It’s also possible that this is using a different configuration for its cores but is still an octa-core processor.

HONOR Philippines hasn’t officially confirmed these details, which leaves room for uncertainty around the exact configuration and clock speed.

Despite these potential variations, the device’s real-world performance is what you’d expect from a last-gen flagship. It handles games like Diablo Immortal, Honor of Kings, and Honkai: Star Rail at or near the highest settings without significant issues.

Thermal management is a concern during extended gaming sessions, as the phone can get quite hot under heavy loads. Almost uncomfortable. While it tends to run hotter versus the Magic6 Pro’s implementation of the chip, its performance is more consistent.

Another notable feature is Wi-Fi 7 support, which has a number of benefits, including faster speeds, lower latency, improved network capacity, and better stability in environments with multiple wireless networks for users with compatible routers.

You get 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, which is expected for a premium mid-range device.

Is the HONOR 400 Pro 5G’s Cameras Good?

The camera system is one of the HONOR 400 Pro 5G’s strongest points, featuring a versatile triple-camera setup. The 200MP main camera with optical image stabilization delivers excellent detail and sharpness. The 50MP telephoto camera, also equipped with OIS, and 12MP ultra-wide lens provide good flexibility for various shooting scenarios.

However, the system isn’t without its quirks. Image processing can occasionally take a couple of seconds to complete.

The ultra-wide camera performs adequately with minimal distortion, while the 50MP front camera delivers quality selfies with a wide-angle option and convincing bokeh effects. The phone also supports Harcourt-style portraits for those seeking more artistic results.

The AI Super Zoom feature, capable of up to 50x digital zoom, shows promise but has limitations. While it can produce decent clarity in many situations, it doesn’t work consistently across all photos and sometimes introduces artifacts that weren’t present in the original scene.

How’s the Audio and Multimedia?

The 6.7-inch AMOLED display is undoubtedly one of the device’s highlights, offering a resolution of 2800 x 1280 pixels with 5,000 nits of peak HDR brightness, 120Hz refresh rate, and certifications for both Netflix HDR and Amazon HDR, making it excellent for media consumption and gaming. It also has Eye protection features, including 3840Hz PWM Risk-Free Dimming.

The dual stereo speaker setup can achieve impressive volume levels thanks to a 200% high volume mode, making it suitable for personal media consumption. However, instrument separation and layering don’t quite match premium offerings like the HONOR Magic6 Pro.

While details are decent, vocals tend to be too forward in the mix, though the overall sound quality remains satisfactory for most users.

How’s the Battery Life of the HONOR 400 Pro 5G?

HONOR 400 Pro 5G Review Unit (140)

The HONOR 400 Pro 5G’s 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery delivers good endurance, easily lasting a full day of heavy use. That’s with my work use case which involves event coverage with a lot of picture-taking and video recording. Then there’s music and video streaming, and with a smartwatch connected to the device, with mobile data enabled throughout the entire duration. From a full charge at around 8 AM, the device still had approximately 10% charge remaining when I got home at around 10 PM.

The included 100W charger is equally impressive, capable of charging the device from 9% to full capacity in approximately 50 minutes, significantly reducing downtime and makes the phone practical for those with a demanding schedule. The device also supports 50W wireless charging, though you may need a specific type of charger to take advantage of the feature.

How’s the Software Experience?

HONOR 400 Pro 5G Review Unit (162)

The HONOR 400 Pro 5G runs MagicOS 9 based on Android 15 with the latest AI features including AI Eraser 2.0, AI Cutout, AI Outpainting, and Remove Passers-by.

HONOR 400 Pro 5G Deepfake Detection 2

There’s also AI Deepfake Detection, which activates during calls to identify potential deepfake usage.

HONOR 400 Pro 5G Review Unit (101)

The interface is generally smooth and responsive, with an acceptable amount of pre-loaded apps.

According to HONOR Philippines, the HONOR 400 Pro 5G will receive 2 years of major Android upgrades and 3 years of security patches, which is acceptable, but lags behind some competitors’ more generous offerings.

Is the HONOR 400 Pro 5G Worth the Price?

The HONOR 400 Pro 5G delivers a flagship-like experience at a more accessible price point. It excels in key areas like display quality, battery life, and overall versatility, making it a great all-around device for a lot of users.

However, the device is not without compromises. Thermal management during intensive tasks, and delay in image processing are areas that could benefit from a refinement. For users who prioritize raw performance above all else, there may be better options available at this price point.

Nevertheless, as a comprehensive package balancing features, build quality, and value, the HONOR 400 Pro 5G stands as a compelling choice for users seeking flagship capabilities without the premium price tag.
