United States President Donald Trump has just declared a 100% tariff on the import of some drones and all aircraft parts. This is on top of the current ban on foreign drones, routers, robots, and even Roombas.
Tariffs on Drones and All Aircraft Parts
The 100% tariff is placed on imports of drones with thermal cameras, drones weighing over 25kg, and any kind of part for any unmanned aircraft. Meanwhile, drones under 250g, like mini consumer drones, have a 25% tariff.
The EU, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will have a lower rate of 15%, while the UK has a 10%. However, it is “provided that substantially all hardware, software, and technology originates within these countries and the United States.”
However, these tariffs aren’t in play if the company commits to making some of its drones or aircraft parts in the United States.
The new tariffs were placed for these reasons:
- “Many U.S. commercial manufacturers that produce UAS domestically are highly dependent on foreign sources for critical UAS components, such as motors, electronic speed controllers, lithium-ion batteries, and docking stations, which creates unacceptable national security vulnerabilities.”
- “Products pose an information technology security risk because their software allows data to be sent back to the manufacturer in a foreign country.”
- “There are concerns as to whether the U.S. industry can produce UAS and UAS components at the required speed and scale to adequately support national security operations and activities, including during a surge for wartime or armed conflict, or in a manner to sustain long-term economic competitiveness.”
Additionally, President Trump’s proclamation states that he’s authorizing the Secretary of Commerce to create a new program to “incentivize new investment in the US production facilities to produce UAS and UAS components.”
Despite announcing more, the US Supreme Court and the US Court of International Trade have both ruled against Trump’s global tariffs.
