Qualcomm is preparing to launch a cheaper version of its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor later this year, according to tipster Digital Chat Station. Carrying the model number SM8850-1-AB, this new chip will enable smartphone manufacturers to deliver near-flagship performance at a lower price point.
Affordable Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Variant Coming?
Early Geekbench 6 scores suggest the cheaper variant performs close to the standard Elite Gen 5. It likely features the same core design, with minor optimizations to clock speeds or binning to reduce costs. Industry insiders expect the chip to power “value flagship” devices priced under 4,000 yuan (approximately USD 590).

If confirmed, this will be the fourth iteration of the Elite Gen 5 platform, joining the standard version, a Samsung-exclusive “for Galaxy” variant, and a seven-core model.

This move by Qualcomm gives brands the flexibility to hit aggressive price targets while maintaining top-tier processing and AI capabilities, and is a win for consumers.
