Apple is reportedly planning a hardware downgrade for the vanilla Apple iPhone 18, opting for older display technology to offset the soaring costs of its high-end flagship models.

Apple iPhone 18 Display Downgrade?

Industry analysts report that the base phone will likely use “M12+” OLED panels, a refinement of the display technology from the iPhone 14 Pro. However, these M12+ panels lag behind the advanced M16 displays for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which incorporate blue phosphorescent OLED materials for improved brightness and efficiency.

This strategy allows Apple to reduce costs on its standard models while enhancing the more premium models.

Reports suggest this move is necessary due to rising “C2” modem costs and the high premiums on TSMC’s next-generation 2nm chip wafers used in the Pro tier. To maintain stable pricing for the average consumer, Apple is reportedly using the base models to fund the aggressive research and development required for its flagship features.
