Amazon has officially reached an agreement to acquire Globalstar, the satellite operator powering Apple’s emergency connectivity features, for approximately USD 11.57 billion.

The acquisition was finalized after complex negotiations involving Apple, which holds a 20% stake in Globalstar and relies on the network for its Emergency SOS and messaging services. Despite the change in ownership, the company and Apple have signed a multi-year collaboration agreement to ensure that iPhone and Apple Watch users retain access to satellite safety features.

The company plans to integrate Globalstar’s 24-satellite constellation and licensed spectrum into its own low Earth orbit network. This will support its upcoming Direct-to-Device (D2D) services, scheduled for a 2028 debut.

“By combining Globalstar’s expertise with Amazon’s innovation, customers can expect faster, more reliable service in more places,” said Panos Panay, Amazon’s Senior VP of Devices & Services.

Apple executives expressed confidence in the deal, noting that the partnership with the company will facilitate future satellite-based features. The acquisition is expected to close in 2027, pending FCC and international regulatory approvals.
