The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has indefinitely suspended Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI) radio and TV stations after an alleged spread of false information.

NTC Orders SMNI to Cease Broadcast

The NTC issued a 30-day suspension on Dec. 21, 2023, however, SMNI continued its broadcasting in certain areas after being issued the suspension order.

In addition, the government body ordered Swara Sug Media Corporation, SMNI’s business name, to cease operations pending a hearing on its administrative case. The case, originating from House Resolution No. 1499, alleges SMNI violated its franchise conditions by spreading false information.

The suspension was ordered because the broadcasting channel’s host Jeffrey Celiz stated that House Speaker Romualdez’s travel expenses reached PHP 1.8 billion, refuted by House officials who reported that the actual spending was PHP 39.60 million between January and October 2023.
