Huawei has officially introduced its newest tri-fold smartphone, the HUAWEI Mate XT 2 ULTIMATE DESIGN, marking the debut of the LogicFolding Tau (τ) Chip in a mass-market device.

Design and Build

The HUAWEI Mate XT 2 ULTIMATE DESIGN introduces a wing-like tri-fold structure that opens from both sides, aiming to make the unfolding motion feel more natural. The rear panel showcases a cloud-inspired pattern created via a traditional brocade-style craftsmanship technique, and the device is offered in purple, white, and black finishes. The camera ring uses a star-shaped diamond-style design made from yttrium crystal, fired at extremely high temperatures and hand-polished across multiple stages to create dozens of faceted surfaces.

The phone relies on a reinforced tri-fold architecture that strengthens both the hinge and screen assembly. It’s the first tri-fold smartphone to achieve dust and water resistance certification. The front display uses a specially engineered protective glass designed to resist scratches and glare, while the main foldable screen combines several protective material layers, including reinforced glass, aerospace-grade steel, and carbon fiber, for added durability. The hinge mechanism has also been upgraded to distribute pressure evenly using a multi-arm design.

Performance

This HUAWEI Mate XT 2 ULTIMATE DESIGN is the first to run on Huawei’s new Kirin 9050 Pro chipset, which the company says delivers a substantial leap in speed and efficiency compared to the prior generation. It combines improvements across hardware, software, and cloud integration, offering a significant boost in overall performance. It also supports smoother multitasking, faster file handling, and improved graphics rendering, including real-time ray tracing for gaming.

The chipset also includes a dedicated AI processing unit capable of running large-scale on-device models, including a large language model integrated into the phone’s Celia assistant. This enables features such as AI-powered photo organization directly on the device.

The HUAWEI Mate XT 2 ULTIMATE DESIGN also features an advanced cooling system that spreads heat across multiple areas of the phone using enhanced conductive materials, along with expanded antenna coverage for improved network connectivity. The device supports satellite-based communication and messaging services, allowing connectivity even without traditional cellular signal, along with a dedicated security processor that enables next-generation data encryption methods to protect user information.

Privacy and Health Features

The new Smart Shield Privacy Screen brings hardware-based privacy protection to a foldable smartphone for the first time. The feature maintains full screen clarity while activated and can be triggered through simple gestures, with automatic prompts appearing in public settings like airports or train stations.

The HUAWEI Mate XT 2 ULTIMATE DESIGN also includes ECG-monitoring software that has received official medical device certification. Users can take a heart-rhythm reading by holding the unfolded screen with both hands, after which the Celia assistant provides an interpretation of the results.

Camera and Software Experience

HUAWEI Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design (7)

The HUAWEI Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design debuts an upgraded camera system designed to improve color accuracy by filtering out infrared interference. It includes several camera types for varied shooting conditions, along with expanded video capture range for improved detail in bright and dark scenes. The camera software also offers smarter scene recognition and real-time shooting guidance, while the tri-fold form factor allows for hands-free photo setups.

Running on HarmonyOS 7, the device supports multi-window multitasking with independently adjustable volume and screen size, aimed at improving productivity and entertainment use on the larger display.
