Senator Bam Aquino rejected calls for an overall ban on video games after a deadly shooting at a high school in Tacloban City, urging lawmakers instead to prioritize the proposed School Safety Bill.
Senator Bam Aquino Pushes for Stricter Campus Security
The call for a blanket ban happened when two minors, aged 14 and 15, opened fire inside the campus, leaving three dead and 20 injured. Reports said that one suspect was an avid player of “GoreBox”, a violent sandbox game.
However, Aquino, chair of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, maintained that decades of studies show no direct link between video games and campus violence.
The senator stated that rather than banning entertainment, the government must further secure schools. The proposed School Safety Act aims to improve campus security through increased surveillance, enhanced deployment of security personnel, and regular safety-focused Parent-Teacher meetings.
While opposing a ban, Aquino emphasized that game developers must still do more to monitor their platforms and protect children from online harm.
