DJI and Insta360 are locked in a new patent dispute after DJI filed two lawsuits in the United States over Insta360’s Luna gimbal camera line, and Insta360 immediately countersued with its own patent claims. The clash focuses on design, control, stabilization, and tracking technologies used in compact handheld cameras, with both companies accusing the other of copying protected inventions.

Legal Fight Intensifies

DJI says the Luna series, which includes the Luna Pro and Luna Ultra, copies the design and features of its Osmo Pocket line. In one lawsuit, DJI alleges two design patent violations tied to the handheld body, gimbal assembly, display, scroll wheel, record button, accessory slot, and base port layout. The company also argues that Insta360’s own promotional materials and demonstrations at the 2026 NAB Show showed products that closely matched the product architecture DJI says it pioneered.

DJI’s second lawsuit focuses on four utility patents which cover a one-control switch between follow and locked modes, built-in subject tracking with real-time display, a gimbal control method driven by the device’s image of the target, and a self-contained tracking-and-display system. DJI claims the Luna line, related accessories, and the Insta360 mobile app copy these patented inventions. It is seeking a permanent injunction, damages of at least a reasonable royalty, profit disgorgement, and enhanced damages.

The company says Insta360 had actual knowledge of the asserted patents and continued to import, manufacture, use, sell, and offer the accused products anyway. DJI filed both cases in the Eastern District of Texas and appears to have waited until Luna officially went on sale in the United States before launching the suits.

Insta360 Strikes Back

Insta360 has responded with two countersuits of its own, saying it categorically rejects DJI’s allegations. Founder JK Liu said the company is not afraid of legal action and is committed to defending its intellectual property. Insta360 says DJI infringed five of its utility patents covering gimbal stabilization, gimbal directional control, smooth camera stabilization, telemetry overlay, and panoramic video stabilization.

According to Insta360, those technologies are used across several major DJI products, including the Osmo Pocket, Ronin/RS, Osmo Mobile, and Osmo 360. The countersuits are a direct response to DJI’s filings, arguing that the timing of DJI’s action, on the same day Luna Ultra launched, was meant to disrupt the product rollout.

Liu also said Luna Ultra was developed through years of independent research and development, with work beginning in 2020. He pointed to earlier Insta360 products, including the ONE R, Link Series webcams, and Flow Series gimbals, as part of the technology and design path that led to Luna Ultra.

Business Stakes

The legal battle adds to what is already tense relations between the two camera makers. DJI had already sued Insta360 earlier this year over alleged patent infringement involving drone-based image processing technology. Now, both sides are alleging that the other copied core innovations used in their latest products.
