Meta has spent a decade selling virtual reality as a headset you strap to your face. At Meta Connect 2026 it announced it is done with that. Meta VR Glasses put a 5K display into a frame weighing about 100 grams, shaped like oversized sunglasses.
They go on sale in Spring 2027 for $1,299.99 USD. Meta’s own summary of the pitch is “a cinema, courtside seat, and workspace in just 100 grams.”
How Meta VR Glasses hit 100 grams
Meta split the device in two. The glasses carry only the sensors and the display. Compute, battery and storage live in a puck connected by an optical tether that clips to a pocket or bag. That is how Meta reached about 100 grams, roughly a deck of cards and five times lighter than a Quest 3.
The screen is Meta’s “5K Infinite Display” on micro-OLED panels at 37 pixels per degree, behind custom pancake lenses. Meta says the clarity is high enough to read text. Dolby Vision handles the picture and Dolby Atmos spatial audio sits in the frames. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite processor does the computing, and the puck battery is rated at three hours of continuous high-resolution playback with 45W fast charging.
Meta AI sits inside the operating system. You talk to it, or use your eyes and hands to open apps and arrange your workspace. No controllers are needed.
A cinema and a courtside seat
They are the first IMAX Enhanced certified VR device, and one of the few ways to watch select films in IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio at home. Disney+ begins streaming 3D titles in November, including Marvel’s The Avengers and Black Panther, with themed immersive environments such as Tatooine and Avengers Tower.
Meta is working with ESPN on Immersive Sports, offering front-row seats with 8K streaming and 180-degree views, starting with college football this year on Meta Quest. After launch, Meta says it will offer more than 100 immersive live sports events a year through MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC.
For gaming, more than 75 titles will be playable with hand gestures alone at launch, and Xbox Cloud Gaming adds hundreds more.
Hologram Calling is the other headline feature. It builds a photorealistic digital version of you, real-time expressions included, and places the person you are talking to in front of you with spatial audio. Meta says it works with whichever calling app you use, from WhatsApp to Zoom.
The trade-off is field of view
Weight and field of view pull against each other. Meta specs the glasses at 70 degrees horizontal and 66 degrees vertical, about 87 degrees diagonal. A Quest 3 covers roughly 110 by 96 degrees. With the optional light blockers attached, the smaller view is a real compromise. Without them, the open sides keep you aware of the room.
Philippine availability
Meta has announced US pricing only. There is no Philippine price or release date, and no word on whether the device reaches local retailers at launch.
This is not Meta’s first attempt at glasses. It showed the Orion prototype at Connect 2024, announced display-equipped Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses in 2025, and the EssilorLuxottica-designed Meta Glasses in June 2026.
