YouTube has just announced an update to how the platform counts public views starting August 24, 2026. Moving from what was previously understood as one view being counted if a user watched at least 30 seconds of a video.
YouTube – Change in View Count
The update will now count a view as soon as a view starts playing or someone enters a live broadcast on YouTube. This comes a year after the platform implemented this approach to Shorts.
The change is also in line with how platforms like TikTok and Instagram count views, which is when a video starts playing. This update, though, will mean a significant increase in view counts on YouTube, especially for those that capture users’ attention for a shorter time.
“Historically, we’ve used multiple view counting systems across different formats. However, we’ve heard that creators want to eliminate this metric confusion and accurately understand their true exposure, which is why we’re making this update,” said the team via its Community Post.

The platform clarified that the original view metric will now be called “Engaged views”. Earnings for creators will be based on “Engaged Shorts views” and “Engaged Watch Hours”. These can be viewed in YouTube Analytics under Advanced Mode.
This change in view count will take effect starting August 24, 2026.
