Google has announced that its Android Quick Share feature is now fully interoperable with Apple’s AirDrop, enabling two-way file sharing between Android and iOS devices. This new capability begins rolling out with the Pixel 10 series.

Google has emphasized that security was built into the core of the feature. The company states that this “Secure by Design” approach includes extensive internal and external auditing. A cornerstone of this security strategy is the use of the memory-safe programming language Rust for the core communication layer. Rust is used to eliminate entire classes of weakness, such as buffer overflow attacks, making the connection resilient against maliciously crafted data packets.

For the initial launch, the feature operates using AirDrop’s “Everyone for 10 minutes” setting. Google confirmed the connection is direct and peer-to-peer, ensuring shared content never goes through a server or is logged.

To validate its security claims, Google engaged the third-party firm NetSPI, which found the feature to be secure and “notably stronger” than other industry implementations. Renowned Stanford security expert Dan Boneh also praised the implementation, specifically citing the use of Rust.

Google has expressed its desire to collaborate with Apple to introduce a “Contacts Only” sharing mode in the future, thereby further enhancing user control over the experience. Hopefully, the feature comes to other Android devices outside the Pixel 10 series of devices in the near future.
