Smartphones nowadays, especially in the midrange market, boast durability, be it through drop or submersion tests. This brings peace of mind to everyday users, especially those who live a more active lifestyle.

Among these devices include the OPPO Reno13 series 5G. The trio comprising the OPPO Reno13 Pro 5G, OPPO Reno13 5G, and OPPO Reno13 F 5G all boast an IP69, IP68, and IP66 rating which allow you to capture your moments and memories even while under freshwater. Yes, you read that right, under fresh water. Keep in mind that this is specific to freshwater, as in rivers, creeks, falls, and even swimming pools.

What is an IP rating?

This refers to a device’s Ingress Protection or IP rating. These always come with two numbers, the first referring to dust or solid foreign object ingress protection and the second indicates water ingress protection.

Both numbers start at 0 to indicate that there is no ingress protection at all. The dust resistance maxes out at 6 for dust-tight, while water resistance goes as high as 9. A 9 rating means the device is protected against high-pressure and temperature water jets.

In the case of the OPPO Reno13 Pro 5G and the rest of the OPPO Reno13 Series 5G, you get the highest possible IP rating for both dust ingress and water ingress protection.

Underwater Photography Mode

OPPO maximized this rating with the introduction of an Underwater Photography Mode in the native camera app.

When you use Underwater Photography Mode, the phone limits the camera app to the three physical buttons. Volume up for photography, volume down for video, and the power button to get out of the mode. The last of which you’ll have to hold to get out of and will trigger a water expulsion mode.

This is recommended to only use in freshwater though like swimming pools, rivers, and waterfalls.

For sure, the feature isn’t for everyone especially if you’re like me who prefers to stay indoors in the city. However, having tried it at the Cambugahay Falls in Siquijor, I found myself enjoying the falls and capturing photos.

I appreciate the durability that most midrange phones come with now, especially having experienced accidentally dropping my phone in water and getting water spilled on my phone. However, there’s something extra special about the addition of a feature that maximizes said durability, in this case, having a dedicated Underwater Photography mode.
