OpenAI has unveiled plans to develop an AI device that could potentially replace traditional smartphones. This initiative represents an expansion of the company’s scope, going beyond software development into hardware manufacturing.
Industry Collaboration
According to recent reports, OpenAI is working with Jonathan Ive, the former Apple designer, to develop prototypes for this innovative AI handset. It aims to fundamentally reimagine how humans interact with computing devices, with a particular focus on voice manipulation and novel terminal interfaces.
Altman emphasized the transformative nature of this endeavor, stating, “Because AI changes the way people and computers interact from the ground up, new terminals and voice (manipulation) will be the key.” A vision that suggests a departure from conventional smartphone interfaces for a more AI-centric user experience.
Part of Stargate
The development is part of OpenAI’s broader “Stargate” initiative, a comprehensive $500 billion investment program aimed at upgrading AI infrastructure. It encompasses various aspects of AI development, including semiconductor design and data center operations, indicating OpenAI’s commitment to controlling the entire AI hardware and software stack.
While the company has confirmed the development of these AI-focused devices is underway, expectations are set for a multi-year development timeline before any prototype reaches the public. From a perspective, this could be a good thing, as it suggests OpenAI’s dedication to perfecting the technology before release, as much as possible.
