Sunbird, the company that Nothing partnered with for Nothing Chats, has announced recently that it will temporarily shut down the usage of its service due to security concerns. The company has announced that it is investigating the security issues and will give an update when it is ready to proceed.
Sunbird Service Temporarily ‘Paused’
What is Sunbird?
It started offering its messaging app that allowed Android users to communicate with Apple users via the iMessage protocol late in 2022 in closed alpha. The company received more attention after Nothing partnered to offer Nothing Chats this month. Nothing Chats basically offered the same service but for the Nothing Phone (2).
However, it was found that messages were actually not end-to-end encrypted and stored data in its database, allowing potential attackers to intercept the messages and even get the data of users. This was found to be an issue on the Sunbird side, which in turn also affected Nothing Chats users, ultimately forcing Nothing to pull the messaging app from the Play Store and delay the launch ‘due to bugs’.

Going back, Sunbird users received a notification announcing that the service will be paused for now. It read:
“Dear Sunbird User. We have decided to pause Sunbird usage for now while we investigate security concerns. We will update you when we are ready to proceed.“
Similar to the announcement of Nothing for its Chats service, it seems like this is temporary and will resume at a later date. We assume this will be after the investigation has been completed and the security concerns have been addressed.
That said though, the company hasn’t released an official announcement on platforms like Twitter and has yet to reflect the temporary shutdown on its website, as of writing this.
