A joint lawsuit has just been filed in Tennesee federal court against Twitter by a team of global music publishers to get over USD 250 million in damages.

The team includes publishers that represent a variety of artists such as Drake, Taylor Swift, and Adele. There are a total of seventeen music publishers included in the lawsuit, among these are Concord, Universal Music Publishing Group, Warner Chappell Music, and Sony Music Publishing.

Twitter and Its Latest Lawsuit

According to the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) CEO David Israelite, Twitter has refused to obtain licenses for the millions of songs on its platform. The social media platform hasn’t also taken steps to prevent copyright infringements or compensate songwriters and music publishers.

The lawsuit mentions that Twitter has allowed leaked music, copyrighted music videos, and other copyrighted material on its platform. The platform claims that it removes content that infringes copyright, but the companies refute assert that it ignores repeat offenders.

A major part of the case is the platform’s alleged failure to take basic measures to prevent instances of infringement despite being aware of them.
