A recent report from DigiTimes claims that MediaTek and NVIDIA entered a partnership to work on mobile chipsets with NVIDIA GeForce GPUs which could come as early as next year.

MediaTek – NVIDIA Mobile Chipsets

The mobile chipsets from the partnership will be targeted to Windows on ARM devices. MediaTek currently has chipsets that power entry-level Chromebooks but the new chipsets will allow the company to enter the high-end laptop market.

NVIDIA has made ARM-based GPUs some examples of this include the NVIDIA Shield and the Tegra chip, the latter is used on the Nintendo Switch. Additionally, NVIDIA has experience making ARM boards with GeForce GPUs but these are mostly used for machine learning tasks.

The chipsets coming from the partnership could use MediaTek’s expertise in making chips that support Android or ChromeOS. Meanwhile, the NVIDIA GeForce GPU boosts the gaming power of the chips as well as could offer its own AI capabilities.

It is uncertain though if the chipsets will solely be for Windows laptops or if the companies will also work on a smartphone chipset as well. Although one thing is certain though, Samsung and AMD will definitely keep their eyes on this reported partnership.
