Apple and Google have submitted a joint proposal for the industry specification to help combat the misuse of Bluetooth location-tracking devices for unwanted tracking.

The first-of-its-kind specification will allow Bluetooth location-tracking devices to be compatible with unauthorized tracking detection and alerts across iOS and Android.

Bluetooth location-tracking device manufacturers namely Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, eufy Security, and Pebblebee have already expressed support for the draft specification. This will offer the best practices and instructions for manufacturers. These are among the biggest names in the market and their commitment to security is definitely good to see.

The joint draft specification was submitted by Apple and Google and will go through a review and comment phase over the next three months at the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The duo will then get to address the feedback and then release a production implementation of the specification by the end of the year.

It will then be supported in future versions of both iOS and Android.
