A recent rumor surfaced mentioning that iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will not support older devices like the iPhone X, and fifth-generation iPad.

iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 Support Rumor

If the reports are true, here’s a quick look at the devices that the upcoming iOS and iPadOS versions won’t support:

  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone X
  • 9.7-inch iPad Pro (first generation)
  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro (first generation)
  • iPad (fifth generation)

This isn’t too surprising if it is true though as last year’s iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 didn’t support a variety of older devices as well including the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, the first iPhone SE, iPad Air (second generation), and iPad mini (fourth generation).

Additionally, these devices run on the Bionic A11 chip which is still affected by a bootrom security vulnerability that the company cannot patch due to it running in a read-only state.

However, another leakster has since come out to reveal that the rumor is ‘simply incorrect’. This rumor claims that all iPhone models that support iOS 16 will also support the upcoming version. This same leakster previously hinted at the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro models ahead of the launch.

We’ll just have to wait and see which of the two reports will be corroborated by other leaksters. Apple is expected to introduce iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and other updates to its operating systems at the WWDC 2023 keynote which was announced to take place on June 5. So there’s plenty of time for new leaks or just straight-up corroborations.
