Samsung has entered the competition to make 2-way satellite communication possible on smartphones. Users in extremely remote locations (or in disaster zones where utilities have been shut off) will be able to connect with the rest of the world utilizing 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks thanks to the forthcoming Samsung Exynos Modem 5300. (NTN).

The new Samsung Exynos modem complies with 3GPP Release 17 to enable compatibility with hardware and software created by smartphone manufacturers as well as forthcoming telecom networks.

A message from your smartphone can be sent to a satellite (and “other non-terrestrial vehicles”), which then bounces it down to a ground station, which then relays it to the ordinary cell network for other users to receive.

Since this is a two-way channel, messages may also go both ways. Moreover, users will soon be able to share high-definition images and movies by satellite in addition to text.

This tech will most likely be adopted for smartphones and what the Korean company dubbed “Urban Air Mobility” for unmanned aircraft and/or flying vehicles in the future. The brand is also working on NarrowBand Internet of Things (NB IoT) to remove the need for high-powered antenna chip integration for phones.

“Samsung aims to take the lead in advancing hybrid terrestrial-NTN communications ecosystems around the world in preparation for the arrival of 6G,” said Min Goo Kim, Samsung Electronics Executive Vice President of Communication Processor Development

The South Korean Government wants 6G prototype networks to be ready in 2026, and Samsung has been working on this technology for years.

The first of these devices should become available by H2 of this year.
