Google Workforce Reduction and Future Plans

In the blog, Pichai mentions difficult economic cycles as a factor in the decision of the company. According to reports, the company’s revenue grew to USD 69 billion this year but actual profits went down to USD 13.9 billion.

These are important moments to sharpen our focus, re-engineer our cost base, and direct our talent and capital to our highest priorities,” he said in the blog.

In addition to detailing the process of the workforce cuts, Pichai also hinted at the future plans of Google. Among these include a shift into AI, specifically developing AI-related services to compete with rival companies.

We have a substantial opportunity in front of us with AI across our products and are prepared to approach it boldly and responsibly,” he said.

The company’s announcement comes following other big tech companies namely Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon announcing layoffs due to the recession.
