WhatsApp has just launched its native Windows app. The new app no longer uses the old web-based backend and runs natively on Windows.

The new app will now run better and launch faster than its previous ‘iteration’. Additionally, it will use fewer resources and allow you to keep chats when your phone is offline.

The company is also launching a native macOS app but it is still under development. The macOS app is now in closed beta and will arrive as a “universal app” that will be based on the iPhone version of the app and will run on Apple silicon laptops.

Regardless of which version you use, you’ll need to link it to your smartphone account linked to a phone number. Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to send and receive messages and make WhatsApp calls with end-to-end encryption.

You can use up to four linked devices while your phone is offline. However, if you haven’t used your phone in 14 days, the account will be automatically logged out.
