Meta, formerly the Facebook Company, has just announced that Facebook’s Face Recognition system will be shutting down. This is part of the company-wide move to limit the use of facial recognition in its products.

The company clarified that those who have opted into the Facial Recognition setting will no longer be automatically recognized in photos and videos. Additionally, the facial template that it has used to identify your faces will be deleted.

This means you will no longer be notified when you appear in photos or videos posted by others and provided recommendations for who to tag in photos.

The change was done with careful consideration, because as the company points out that the technology was useful in other means. One of these is the automatic alt text system that uses advanced AI to generate descriptions of images for people who are blind and visually impaired. It used the system to tell them when they or a friend is in a photo.

Meta isn’t totally getting rid of the system though, as it mentions that it can still be used instead for verifying identity or to prevent fraud and impersonation. However, this will be further worked on while engaging outside experts.

The Face Recognition system on Facebook will be removed over the coming weeks.
