  • Black Shark 4 Survives the JRE Durability Test

Black Shark 4 Survives the JRE Durability Test

2021 has seen two gaming phones fail to YouTuber JerryRigEverything’s bend test, with Xiaomi releasing the Black Shark 4, it was its turn to go through the durability test.

The Xiaomi gaming device went through the usual tests namely scratch, burn, and bend test. In addition, Zack of JerryRigEverything tore down the Fun Cooler 2 accessory to take a look at how it works.

The Black Shark 4 has a screen protector pre-installed but its tempered glass display showed scratches at level 6 on the Mohs hardness scale and deeper ones at level 7. This is pretty much expected from a glass panel.

The rest of the frame of the device is metal and features two shoulder buttons on the right side that can be raised via magnets. The display itself survived a direct flame for about 25 seconds before discoloration but it did recover over time.

Despite the Black Shark 4 being the cheapest out of the released gaming devices of the year, it held up impressively well by not giving out in the bend test. It is the first gaming device to do so after the ASUS ROG Phone 5 and Lenovo Legion Phone Duel 2 bent into and two and three parts, respectively.

Two New Black Shark Devices Spotted on the Google Play Console: Possibly the Black Shark 4 and 4 Pro

Two new Black Shark devices were seen on the Google Play Console – one codenamed “kaiser” with the model number KSR-A0 and “penrose” with the model number PRS-A0. Both are speculated to be the Black Shark 4 and Black Shark 4 Pro, respectively, however, the “penrose” listing doesn’t match up with expectations of the upcoming series.

The “kaiser” was spotted last week with a FullHD+ display and 8GB of RAM. The “penrose”, on the other hand, was listed with Android 11, 12GB RAM, and a FullHD+ panel. In addition, the list indicates an SM8250 (AKA the Snapdragon 865) which goes against the reports of the new gaming phones packing a Snapdragon 888 SoC.

The Google Play Console listing of the “penrose” includes an image of the device revealing a center-aligned front camera. The photo also shows the buttons on the left and right sides of the phone. The one on the left looks to be a volume rocker, while the ones on the right look like trigger buttons for gaming.

It is uncertain if “penrose” is the Black Shark 4 Pro because of the FullHD+ resolution panel compared to the QHD+ display on its predecessor.

Not much else is known about the “penrose” device but the “kaiser” is expected to arrive with a 6.67-inch display, 4500mAh battery, and 120W charging.
