A touchscreen MacBook is reportedly in development, according to a recent post from supply chain leaker Instant Digital on Weibo. This claim aligns with previous reports from industry analysts Mark Gurman and Ming-Chi Kuo regarding Apple’s laptop pipeline. Launch timelines currently point toward a release between late 2026 and 2027. The AI-induced memory chip shortage is noted as a primary factor that could push the arrival into 2026 or 2027.

Macbook Ultra Expected Specs and Interface

The touchscreen feature is slated for the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, which may also introduce M6 Pro and M6 Max chips, OLED displays, and a Dynamic Island. These devices are described as “touch-friendly” rather than “touch-first,” allowing users to switch between touch and mouse inputs interchangeably. On the software side, the upcoming macOS 27 Golden Gate update already shows preparations for this change with a more touch-friendly interface. The premium laptops might also feature a thinner chassis and adopt “MacBook Ultra” branding.

A Change in Company Direction

Building a touch-screen laptop represents a significant reversal of Apple’s historical design choices. Back in 2010, Steve Jobs openly dismissed vertical touch screens, stating they caused arm fatigue during extended use. Hardware engineering chief John Ternus echoed this stance in 2021, explaining that the Mac interface was strictly optimized for indirect input like trackpads. However, recent supply chain indicators confirm that Apple is actively adapting its hardware strategy to include touch capability.
