Apple is reportedly shaking up its wearable tech strategy, moving away from the Vision Pro headset lineup to accelerate the development of lightweight smart glasses.
Apple Pivots Beyond Vision Pro
According to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, incoming CEO John Ternus has approved a major roadmap overhaul ahead of a leadership transition later this year. Plans for a second-generation Vision Pro and a lighter “Vision Air” model have allegedly been shelved. Instead, Apple is redirecting resources toward two distinct smart glasses projects.
The first is a display-free, AI-powered pair of smart glasses designed to directly challenge Meta’s Ray-Ban collaboration, with a projected launch as early as 2027.

The second, more ambitious project involves advanced augmented reality (AR) glasses utilizing optical waveguide technology to project digital images onto the real world, tentatively targeted for 2029 or later. While Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests a Vision Pro 2 prototype remains in testing, both industry insiders agree that the broader headset category is on pause for the foreseeable future.
The move reflects a growing tech industry realization that everyday users favor affordable, lightweight, and practical wearables over bulky, high-end mixed reality headsets.
