Grab Philippines is rolling out a slate of operational measures and partnerships to keep ride-hailing and delivery services accessible during the peak holiday rush, amid mounting traffic and a surge in demand across Metro Manila and key transport hubs.

The company is focusing on airport shuttle services, carpooling pilots, and tech-driven features to stretch existing transport capacity while providing additional support to its driver-partners.

Holiday demand and congestion pressures

Grab data shows that heavy traffic is extending the completion time of ride-hailing trips by around 20 to 25 percent during peak hours, reducing the number of journeys that transport network vehicle service (TNVS) drivers can complete in a day. This coincides with a projected 36 percent rise in fourth-quarter demand for ride-hailing services, putting pressure on the available supply of vehicles on the road.

As such, Grab Philippines is coordinating with agencies like the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to help ensure ride-hailing options remain available to commuters through the holidays.

Company leadership acknowledges that getting a ride may feel more difficult at certain times but maintains that preparations have been underway since early in the year to keep access as steady as possible.

Focus on airport accessibility

With year-to-date figures showing more than a 30 percent increase in ride-hailing demand at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Grab has strengthened its partnership with New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), the private consortium operating NAIA, to help manage foot traffic and reduce bottlenecks at key terminals.

Part of this collaboration also includes the deployment of free airport shuttle rides during periods when travellers typically struggle to secure a Grab ride, specifically between 4:00 PM and 1:00 AM. The shuttles will operate across three holiday weekends—December 5–8, 12–16, and 19–22—linking NAIA Terminal 3 to the One Ayala public transport terminal so passengers can connect to the wider mass transit network.

Shuttle services and concierge support

The shuttle service is designed to move groups of passengers out of the congested arrivals area quickly, freeing space for both private and ride-hailing vehicles at the airport. NNIC officials view the initiative as a way to widen transport options and make airport operations more efficient at the busiest time of the year.

Grab has also enhanced its 24-hour booking assistance booths and concierge presence at NAIA Terminal 3. These stations help arriving passengers secure a GrabCar, especially those who may be unfamiliar with the app or are experiencing connectivity issues.

Carpooling and Sabay Sakay initiative

Grab is turning to shared rides as one of the ways to ease pressure on the limited supply of vehicles in the metro’s key business districts. The company piloted its scheduled carpooling program called “Sabay Sakay” in partnership with the DOTr ahead of the expected spike in holiday transport demand.

Sabay Sakay focuses initially on the Pasig–Makati and Pasig–BGC corridors, with on-ground concierges consolidating bookings for these routes, aiming to increase seat utilization by grouping passengers with similar origins and destinations into shared rides.

Maximizing fleet efficiency with Group Rides

Grab is also leaning on in-app features to extract more efficiency from the existing TNVS fleet. One central tool is Group Rides, which lets a host share a link with up to three other passengers so that each can enter their own pick-up or drop-off points while still riding together in a single GrabCar.

Using its mapping algorithms, the app generates a route that connects all of the specified locations in the most efficient sequence possible. By consolidating what would otherwise be multiple separate journeys into a multi-stop trip, the feature aims to boost driver productivity and allow more passengers to be served despite congestion and supply constraints.

Supporting food delivery during holiday feasts

Holiday gatherings are driving not only mobility demand but also food delivery volumes. To respond, Grab has introduced Party Platters, a feature aimed at simplifying large bulk food orders, often associated with parties and corporate events.

The system offers bundled deals for big orders and distributes these across several delivery riders through backend logistics technology. This setup is intended to keep fulfillment smooth and avoid overloading individual riders, even as delivery demand spikes alongside transport needs.

Driver support and service standards

Alongside passenger-focused measures, Grab emphasizes support for its driver-partners as they contend with heavier traffic and longer hours on the road. The company is updating refresher modules on driver decorum, ride completion, and passenger handling through its in-app learning platform, Grab Academy.

These modules are meant to reinforce standards around creating safe, respectful spaces inside vehicles and maintaining consistent service quality under pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What main challenge is Grab addressing this holiday season?

A: Grab is addressing the combined impact of heavier traffic and a significant rise in ride-hailing demand, which together slow down trips and strain the available supply of TNVS vehicles, especially during peak hours and at major hubs like NAIA.

Q: How will airport travelers benefit from the new measures?

A: Airport travelers will have access to free shuttle services from NAIA Terminal 3 to One Ayala during selected evening and late-night windows, as well as 24-hour booking assistance booths to help secure rides when app-based bookings become difficult.

Q: What is the purpose of Group Rides and Sabay Sakay?

A: Group Rides and Sabay Sakay are designed to increase seat utilization and make better use of the existing fleet by combining passengers heading along similar routes into shared or multi-stop trips, allowing more people to be served with the same number of vehicles.

Q: How is Grab supporting its driver-partners during the peak period?

A: Grab is providing refresher training through Grab Academy on service standards, passenger handling, and maintaining safe, respectful environments, aiming to help drivers navigate heavy traffic and high demand while sustaining service quality.

Q: Does the Party Platters feature affect transport services?

A: Party Platters is focused on food delivery, using backend systems to spread large orders across multiple riders so that delivery demand can increase without overburdening individual drivers or compromising overall service reliability.
