Jagex used the biggest RuneFest yet to announce RuneScape 4, a fourth MMO in the 25-year-old franchise and the first mainline entry built on Unreal Engine. The reveal headlined a weekend of news at the NEC in Birmingham, where more than 6,000 fans gathered on October 3 and 4. The game is early in development, with no release window or confirmed platforms.

RuneScape 4 is coming to Unreal Engine

RuneScape 4 has no final title yet, and Jagex has been using RS4 as a working title. The studio says the project is “a few years away” and told press it began as a planned expansion for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, its Unreal Engine survival game, before growing into a full MMO of its own. A concept teaser showed a dragon rider flying over a town, floating islands, and a stylized 4 logo.

Jagex described the new game as a fourth pillar alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The company says each game has its own dedicated team and will keep receiving updates. Monetisation, platforms, and whether progress carries over from the current game have not been announced.

RuneScape Reignited launches on December 2

Jagex also dated Reignited, a new permanent character type that arrives on December 2. Reignited characters start at level 3 with a fresh economy and their own hiscores, and no paid progression. They share the same worlds as existing characters, now called Veterans, but the two groups cannot trade with each other and each side has its own Grand Exchange.

Reignited players get free access to members’ content from December 2 to December 12. The same update adds the Adventure Guide, a curated path through 25 years of content, and the next stage of Jagex’s remastering work. The long-awaited Plugin API launches this month. For 2027, RuneScape gets three story arcs, Hoard of Dragons in January, City of Gnomes, and Secrets of Karamja, plus an Agility rework, solo bosses, and a new Grandmaster Quest.

Old School RuneScape and Dragonwilds plan 2027

Old School RuneScape gets its busiest roadmap to date. The Fractured Archive, a new endgame raid, launches on October 20. Hardcore Worlds arrives on November 4. In 2027, the Golden Gates of Menaphos open at last after 20 years, bringing the Master quest Fool’s Gold, the game’s first Skilling Dungeon, and the Soul Altar hidden within Jalanam. Jagex also teased a Fairytale finale, a Mining and Smithing rework, and the mysterious Tower of Xophoros.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds, which launched on PC and consoles earlier this year, gets the Luminance update in December as a prelude to 2027’s two-part Blood Crystal Saga. Luminance introduces the Elves, new elven building pieces, and the Prayer skill. Official modding through CurseForge is planned for the first half of 2027, alongside secure servers and leaderboards.
