The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has formally raised concerns regarding the impact of violent video games on Filipino youth. During a press conference at Camp Crame, DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla urged Congress and relevant government bodies to investigate the matter and explore potential regulatory measures. DILG is pushing for a comprehensive study that could lead to a permanent ban on certain games that showcase extreme violence.

Violent Content in Gaming

Secretary Remulla explicitly pointed out the potential dangers that continuous exposure to graphic digital content poses to minors. He argued that games promoting intense violence and gore can negatively alter the behavioral development of younger players. Remulla mentioned that these digital platforms can desensitize the youth to critical realities like death and violence. Because of these observed risks, he stated his belief that games emphasizing high levels of violence, such as the sandbox game Gorebox, should be permanently prohibited in the country.

School Safety Concerns Over Tacloban School Shooting

The sudden push for strict gaming regulations follows a recent school shooting incident in Tacloban City that left three students dead and several others injured. The fact that the suspects involved in the tragic event were only 14 and 15 years old has shocked everyone and triggered nationwide discussions on youth safety. Philippine Government officials are now scrutinizing various external risk factors, including how deeply young citizens are influenced by aggressive digital media including video games.

Calls for Legislative Intervention

DILG is calling on lawmakers to carefully study the mechanics of implementing an effective prevention system against violent games. Moreover, DILG has also demand immediate legislative intervention regarding accessible online content. Remulla emphasized that the government needs to find actionable ways to block harmful platforms from reaching vulnerable age groups.

DILG clarified that while it respects modern technology, its priority remains focused on safeguarding the mental and physical well-being of the youth. Moving forward, the agency intends to collaborate with other sectors to foster a more responsible digital environment across the Philippines.
