Samsung’s recent patent filings reveal the tech giant is developing two innovative rollable smartphone concepts aimed at expanding screen real estate while improving device durability.

The patents, first spotted by tech publication WearView, outline two distinct approaches to a rollable form factor. The first model features a side-rolling display that stretches outward.

At rest, the device resembles a traditional smartphone silhouette, but when unfurled, it expands to tablet-like proportions. This design reportedly incorporates a movable rear camera module that shifts as the screen expands to maintain an ultra-slim profile.

The second features a multi-part body engineered to protect the vulnerable flexible panel. When closed, the display mechanism pulls entirely inward, hiding the soft screen completely inside the phone’s chassis to prevent everyday scratches and impact damage. Pulling the two edges apart rolls the hidden screen outward into view.

This patent documentation reveals plans to integrate advanced internal sensors in devices that would track screen speed and distance, enabling dynamic resizing of the user interface.
