Micron, one of the big three memory manufacturers alongside Samsung and SK Hynix, has announced that it’s closing down its consumer brand, Crucial. Crucial is one of the longstanding RAM and SSD brands in the PC Consumer market, and its parent company announced its closure in hopes of selling its chips to AI companies directly.

“The AI-driven growth in the data center has led to a surge in demand for memory and storage. Micron has made the difficult decision to exit the Crucial consumer business in order to improve supply and support for our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments. Thanks to a passionate community of consumers, the Crucial brand has become synonymous with technical leadership, quality and reliability of leading-edge memory and storage products. We would like to thank our millions of customers, hundreds of partners and all of the Micron team members who have supported the Crucial journey for the last 29 years”

-Sumit Sadana, EVP and Chief Business Officer at Micron Technology

The Shift to AI Enterprise

Micron is reallocating its manufacturing capacity to focus entirely on advanced memory solutions, directly serving AI giants and strategic customers amid the unprecedented global supply strain. This decision signals Micron’s full commitment to the highly profitable, high-growth Artificial Intelligence (AI) data center market at the expense of the consumer market. Micron will continue to ship Crucial consumer products until the end of February 2026. Warranty service and support for Crucial products will still be provided by Micron.

Crucial is a brand that’s well known to be a brand that offers budget-friendly memory products. The brand’s exit will surely impact the already crippling consumer market, as consumers have fewer options to choose from. DRAM and SSD prices are still expected to rise as there are no signs of the AI boom slowing down.
