OpenAI has just shared that it has started pilot tests for group chats in ChatGPT in four countries – Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.

The new feature allows you to create conversations in ChatGPT with friends and family, just like you would in messaging apps.
It will help groups with things like planning their itinerary for a vacation or finding a restaurant for a night out. Other uses for this would be collaborating with colleagues at work or classmates or school to finish a report or a project.
If you’re in the aforementioned countries, you can tap on the people icon on the top right corner of the screen, and ChatGPT will create a new conversation without your chat history. You can add people or share a link with up to 20 people.
Anyone with the invite link can bring new people in; similarly, anyone can mute or remove other participants, except the person who created the chat. Moreover, sensitive content will be limited for everyone if someone in the group chat is under 18.
OpenAI reveals that the group chat feature runs on GPT-5.1 Auto, a model able to choose a model depending on the response. It also ensured that the chatbot would remain quiet unless summoned by mentioning “ChatGPT”.
The company hasn’t revealed yet when the feature will be introduced to more countries and users, but it will continue to tweak the feature before the rollout.
