YouTube introduced the Likeness Detection Tool, an AI-powered feature that aims to help its creators protect themselves against AI-generated deepfakes.

The tool was introduced via a video on its Creator Insider channel. It looks to protect creators from unwanted third parties using their likeness or voice in AI-generated videos.

The current iteration of the feature is available via the YouTube Partner Program, and will be rolled out to other creators over time.

Eligible creators will have to go through an onboarding process which includes giving consent to data processing, submitting a government-approved ID, and uploading a video selfie. The process is said to be long and thorough, which is likely to avoid instances of unwanted “creators” using the name of other creators.

These will then be stored on the Google server. After the verification process is done, YouTube will show creators videos where it suspects AI was used to make a deepfake. The tool will also categorize these videos based on priority.

Creators can then request the removal of the video or ask it to be archived. The platform will then take appropriate action once the request is filed.

YouTube reminds creators that will use the tool, though, that it is still in its early days and may show their own videos along with AI-generated videos.
