OPPO introduced its OPPO Reno14 Series 5G in the Philippines recently, and it has already hit milestones for the company and the Reno series as a whole. That includes the middle-of-the-road option, the OPPO Reno14 5G.

The OPPO Reno14 5G looked pretty identical to its predecessor, in both design and some of its hardware. While this could be disappointing for some, especially those using the Reno13 5G and hoping to upgrade, how does it fare in the real world? We were given a unit to test for ourselves, and here is our experience with it.

Before we get to it, we’ve already released our first impressions, which you can check out here

Build and Design

The OPPO Reno14 5G has a very familiar design as it is pretty identical to its predecessor. This includes the size with a 6.59-inch 1.5K AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Now, that said, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because the OPPO Reno13 5G is a stunning device, making the OPPO Reno14 5G equally beautiful.

OPPO Reno14 5G Review 1

We received the Luminous Green colorway, which, compared to the Opal White color option, with its Iridescent Mermaid Design, isn’t quite as eye-catching. However, the Luminous Green color offers an elegant touch to the device with its deep green color and the Luminous Loop for a pop of brightness.

Admittedly, though, the Opal White color option is one you should at least check out for yourself if you can. The white backdrop for the Iridescent Mermaid design is just a sight to behold.

I can’t forget the Velvet Glass around the back, which is smooth and has a matte finish. As premium-looking glossy glass back designs are on smartphones, I love the feel of a nice matte finish. The matte finish generally doesn’t retain as many fingerprints as the glossy counterparts, and this is the same on the Reno14 5G.

OPPO Reno14 5G Review buttons

The OPPO Reno14 5G has an aluminum frame with all the buttons on the right-hand side of the device. The height of the buttons, coupled with the size of the device, makes it easy to handle with one hand.

At the bottom are the USB-C port flanked by the SIM tray and a microphone on the left and the speaker grille on the right.

The device is also rated IP66, IP68, and IP69, meaning it can withstand submersion in water, water jets, and dust. This gives a little peace of mind, especially for clumsy people like myself. Moreover, this enables the Underwater 4K Video capabilities, which is an upgrade from its predecessor, and I’ll get to it later.

Performance

The MediaTek Dimensity 8350, coupled with 12GB RAM and up to 512GB, is pretty familiar if you’re coming from the Reno13 5G, as it is the same chipset. If you’re looking for the Dimensity 8450, it powers the Reno14 Pro 5G.

With that said, here are the benchmarks of the device:

The MediaTek Dimensity 8350 on the OPPO Reno14 5G handles everyday tasks like doomscrolling on social media and watching YouTube videos with ease. That’s not surprising, though, as OPPO has worked with this chipset before, and I assume the company has had the time to optimize its devices with the chipset. This includes playing on the phone.

The device features a MediaTek HyperEngine coupled with AI HyperBoost 2.0, which are said to work hand-in-hand to deliver faster frame rates and smoother gameplay while keeping your phone cool.

Speaking of cooling, the OPPO Reno14 5G has an AI Nano Dual-Drive Cooling System with a 4700mm2 vapor chamber area.

The combination of these delivers a pretty solid gaming experience on the OPPO Reno14 5G. For MOBA players like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Honor of Kings, you can easily play at the highest settings, yes, high FPS included.

More impressively, though, I was able to play Honkai Star Rail at the highest settings at 60 fps. Even at these settings, I was able to auto farm my materials and hardly feel any alarming heating from the OPPO Reno14 5G itself.

As for Genshin Impact, you’re recommended to play it at Medium settings upon boot. But you’re still in the clear with High Settings at 30 fps. This will allow you to enjoy the views and characters of the game while lessening the heat and strain on the device.

Camera

OPPO Reno14 5G Review camera app

The OPPO Reno14 5G has an upgraded camera system from its predecessor, with the return of a telephoto lens, but this time, it is a 50MP 3.5x periscope telephoto snapper. This joins the 50MP main camera and an 8MP ultrawide lens. The new camera system is dubbed the Ultra-Clear LowLight Camera System, which includes a triple flash system.

The 50MP main camera is a reliable shooter delivering vibrant photos with good color reproduction. It’s as good as they come without needing to tweak the settings too much, and that’s a good thing. Moreover, coupled with the triple LED flash, the OPPO Reno14 5G can capture impressive photos even at night.

In this day and age, I now welcome a telephoto lens with open arms, and this is pretty much the same for the 50MP 3.5x periscope lens on the OPPO Reno14 5G. It delivers roughly the same quality of photos as the main camera without the need to get physically close to your subject.

Perhaps the weakest link in the camera system is the 8MP ultrawide lens, but that’s a minor nitpick. It still plays a role by giving you the freedom to add more elements to your photos, while still delivering decent shots.

I can’t forget the camera without the aforementioned Underwater 4K Video capabilities and photography uses. This is pretty handy, especially for those of you who are outdoorsy or just like making new memories by the pool. Keep in mind, though, that this is only recommended for fresh water use.

Rounding out the camera setup is the 50MP snapper. It is a good snapper that can surely help you Make Your Moment and memories with your friends and family, while giving you photos that you can use for social media as well.

If you want to see these photos in higher resolution, I’ve uploaded them here

Battery

The OPPO Reno14 5G is equipped with a large 6000mAh battery and supports up to 80W SUPERVOOC charging. That’s the largest capacity of battery on a base Reno model to date.

Before I get to my experience, I’ll share the results of the PCMark battery benchmark, which runs the device through everyday tasks like browsing documents, editing, and watching videos until the battery hits 20%. I ran the test thrice, one for each of the refresh rate modes of the OPPO Reno14 5G – Adaptive, Standard, and High.

Here are the results:

OPPO Reno14 5GTime
Standard16h 0m
Adaptive13h 19m
High13h 10m

I used the device mainly on Adaptive, and on average, I got about 13 hours of use per day. This is because I also snuck in some gaming, which adds to the battery drain. This was even shorter when I’d be out the entire day and had mobile data turned on the entire time.

Expect it to be even shorter if you play longer gaming sessions, and depending on the graphical settings of the games.

My day-to-day use of a phone is more akin to the PCMark battery test, and even then, the 80W SUPERVOOC charger and the charger included is enough to get me back to full in under an hour.

The combination of a large battery and a fast charging speed is a sweet spot I didn’t know I would ever get to experience, but I’m loving it.

Software

Last, and not least, we get to software, which, out of the box, the OPPO Reno14 5G runs on ColorOS 15 on top of Android 15. Sadly, no Android 16 yet, but we expect the OPPO Reno14 Series 5G to be among the first to get ColorOS 16 when it rolls out.

OPPO Reno14 5G Review ColorOS 15

I’ve mentioned this many times, but ColorOS is among my favorite Android skins, especially when it comes to customization options. The latest version even adds more options to make your device uniquely yours. Additionally, ColorOS has among the best AI features in the Android market today, along with Samsung’s OneUI and HONOR’s MagicOS.

Among the features that ColorOS 15 introduces are AI Toolbox, AI Assistant for Notes, and  AI Recording Summary. The first of which crafts replies and captions for you or summarizes web articles, and more, all by swiping from the sidebar.

It also has new AI-powered photo editing tools like AI Recompose, helping you with framing your photos, and AI Perfect Shot, which allows you to get that perfect shot in your group photos every time. This is on top of already established features like AI Editor 2.0.

One downside to the software, though, is the bloatware that you get when you boot up the device. I wish it were drastically less or maybe give the users more choice in what is installed, but alas, it is how it is, and it has been since time immemorial.

All in all, though, ColorOS 15 is a smooth experience that opens a lot of customization doors coupled with useful AI features. It may not be for everyone, but it’s better than other options in the market.

Verdict

The OPPO Reno14 5G starts at PHP 31,999 (12GB+256GB) and maxes out at PHP 34,999 (12GB+512GB). With other options in the market near its price range, I think the OPPO Reno14 5G is still worth checking out.

OPPO Reno14 5G Review 2

Yes, even if you’re using the OPPO Reno13 5G and have the budget to upgrade. On paper, it doesn’t seem like a big leap in performance, but you are getting an overall better camera system with a 50MP 3.5x periscope telephoto lens and a larger battery. Both of which are enough reasons, at least for me, to try it out at a store.

However, if you’re coming from the Reno13 Pro 5G, it is basically the same device.

The best value for money comes if you’re coming from even older Reno devices like the Reno12 Pro 5G, Reno12 5G, and even the Reno11 Pro 5G.

Compared to other mid-range devices, though, the Reno14 5G can still hold its own. OPPO’s innovations, like in the AI space, cover enough ground, at least for me. If it at least piques your interest, I highly recommend checking it out at your nearest authorized store. It’s a pretty balanced overall device, including its design, camera, and even performance. Yes, that’s despite the same Dimensity 8350 as its predecessor.
