President Marcos Jr. announced a commitment to provide satellite-based internet access to all public schools nationwide, particularly those in remote areas.

Speaking at the national kickoff of the Department of Education’s “Brigada Eskwela” program in Bulacan, the President emphasized this initiative as a crucial step to bridge the digital divide in Philippine education.

Marcos highlighted the use of Starlink, a satellite internet service, to achieve this goal. He described Starlink as a “faster alternative” that is simple to deploy, requiring only connection and plugging in to provide Wi-Fi access.

This technology is deemed ideal for rural schools where traditional connectivity has been a significant challenge.

The President stressed that ensuring reliable internet access in schools is vital for integrating modern technology into classrooms and enhancing digital learning.

He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting teachers by reducing administrative burdens, enabling them to focus on instruction, and offering retraining and professional development programs. Education Secretary Sonny Angara is leading efforts to streamline teachers’ duties.

This move comes amidst ongoing calls from teachers’ groups for improved working conditions, including better compensation and reduced paperwork. Marcos reiterated his belief that teachers are the nation’s “true heroes” and deserve comprehensive support to nurture students effectively.
