According to a recent report from IDC, Huawei emerged as the dominant player in China’s foldable smartphone market in the final quarter of 2024. The Shenzhen-based tech giant captured a significant 48.6% share of the 2.505 million units shipped during the period. Honor trailed in second place with a 20.6% market share.
IDC: Huawei Foldable Device Market Leader Q4 2024
Despite Huawei’s strong performance, the foldable market in China appears to be losing steam. Shipments in Q4 2024 witnessed an almost 10% year-on-year decline, marking the first quarterly decrease since IDC began tracking the segment nine quarters ago.

IDC analysts suggest that despite advancements in foldable technology, including thinner designs, larger batteries, and less visible creases, consumer enthusiasm is waning. High pricing remains a significant barrier, primarily attracting early adopters. As this niche market matures, appealing to a broader consumer base has become increasingly challenging. IDC emphasizes the need for more substantial technological breakthroughs to reignite consumer interest.
Huawei’s market leadership is attributed to its diverse foldable portfolio, encompassing both popular clamshell and book-style form factors. Their offerings include the more affordable Nova Flip and premium Pocket 2, the recently launched Mate X6, and the unique tri-fold Mate XT Ultimate.
