The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) issued a warning to the public regarding AI chatbots.
DICT and DOST’s Warnings About AI Chatbots
DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy emphasized the importance of being “more discerning” when using AI chatbots, irrespective of their creators and the details they disclose. Stating that as users engage with AI, they will be sharing information and potentially sensitive personal data, so it’s crucial to be cautious about sharing these.

Some examples of dangers you can face are:
- Misinformation: AI chatbots can be used to spread false information or propaganda.
- Scams: Malicious actors might use AI chatbots to trick people into revealing personal information or sending money.
- Privacy Concerns: AI chatbots may collect user data without proper consent or transparency.
Here are some general tips to avoid these hazards:
- Be cautious of chatbots that make unrealistic promises or claims.
- Don’t share personal information with a chatbot unless you are confident about its legitimacy.
- If you suspect a chatbot is malicious, report it to the appropriate authorities.
These warnings and safety tips came after the recent AI disruption caused by the launch of the Chinese AI platform DeepSeek on the market. Concerns about this platform’s security include inappropriately using content it didn’t have rights to and an apparent geopolitical bias toward China which raises questions about the safety of AI chatbots in general.
