The Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) announced that it will start its test runs for the interoperability of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags in the country’s expressways today, January 10, 2024.

The tests are in preparation for the goal to implement the unified system by July 2024.

Currently, the expressways are operated by San Miguel Corporation (SMC) and Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC). The two companies use different RFID systems. SMC utilizes AutoSweep for its expressways namely:

  • Muntinlupa Cavite Expressway
  • Ninoy Aquino International Airport Expressway
  • Skyway
  • Skyway Stage 3
  • South Luzon Expressway
  • Southern Tagalog Arterial Road Tollway
  • Tarlac Pangasinan La Union Expressway

Meanwhile, the MPTC uses EasyTrip for:

  • Cavite Expressway
  • Cavite Laguna Expressway
  • C5 Link
  • NLEX Harbor Link
  • North Luzon Expressway
  • Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway

The unified RFID system is good news for all motorists who frequent the different expressways. This will also further promote cashless payments which, in turn, will help shorten queues on the tollway plazas.

TRB Executive Director Alvin Carullo mentioned in an interview, “Motorists will have an account and one RFID tag and this means that the loading for this RFID will only be done once, unlike the current system that requires loading of two accounts.”

Registration for RFIDs can be done online and is free.
